new to yoga?

We offer monthly Yoga 101 workshops, which are true introductions for the yoga newbie.

We believe the people who can benefit the most from yoga are regular persons who may not exercise regularly, or at all.  Intentional movement and bodily awareness are the essence of yoga, and there is just as much yoga in simple motion as there is in a headstand.

If you've been intimidated by images of people balancing on their forearms or twisting their legs behind their heads, try one of our Gentle Physioyoga classes. You will be surprised at how good it makes you feel.

We also offer many classes labeled as "beginner" after the class title.  These classes are appropriate for the true yoga beginner because they are more fundamental than the "all levels" classes.  They are intended to provide a solid introduction to the movement concepts that are the building blocks of all hatha yoga practice (the asanas, or postures).

how to attend a yoga class

  • all Karma Yoga classes are "drop-in", so there is no need to sign up in advance for class

  • try to arrive at least ten minutes early so you can sign in and class can start on time

  • wait at least 90 minutes after eating a meal to attend class -- most yogis do not practice on a full stomach
  • before leaving for class, don't forget to check our website for any last-minute schedule changes or cancellations

  • wear your favorite comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (or you can change in our changing rooms) -- normal street clothes are usually too restrictive to foster the type of movement you'll experience in a yoga class

  • there is no need to bring your own mat or props -- we provide them!

  • bring your water bottle in case you feel dehydrated

  • payment can be made by cash, check, credit card, or "membership" and "class cards" (see pricing section)

  • tell your teacher you're new to yoga before class starts -- she or he will probably want to fill you in on a few basics before you get started

  • have fun! yoga is first and foremost a way to get to know your body, so enjoy yourself
